The ability of staff to be able to use any of the portable fire extinguishers that can be found around their workplace can reduce the risk of a small fire growing into a large one. Statistics show that around 80% of all fires are extinguished using a portable fire extinguisher, before the fire service arrive.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 states that “You have responsibility for the provision of appropriate firefighting equipment. It is also your responsibility to check that all fire fighting equipment is in the correct position and in satisfactory order before the premises is used. Appropriate staff should be trained in the use of all such equipment.” Given the additional requirement for ‘duty of care” under Health and Safety Legislation it is important that staff are given information about the fire fighting equipment that they may come across.
Focus on Fire Extinguishers has been produced to help achieve these requirements. This short DVD covers the operation of the extinguishers and how they are applied correctly to the fire, for each extinguisher type information is provided about the types of fire on which they may and may not be used and any specific safety considerations associated with the extinguisher types. The equipment covered in Focus on Fire Extinguishers includes; Water, Foam, CO2 and Dry Powder extinguishers. |
